Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs provide answers to common questions about how an end-of-life doula can support you and your loved ones at end of life. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us to discuss further.

Some people choose to engage a doula early, even as they begin planning or discussing their wishes for the future, while others reach out during the later stages of life or following a terminal diagnosis. The best time is whenever you or your loved ones feel you could benefit from open and engaging discussions about your end-of-life wishes.

While hospice care focuses on medical support and pain management, an end-of-life doula offers non-medical, holistic support. A doula complements hospice care by addressing the emotional and practical needs which are often overlooked. For example, a doula may help families sort through belongings, plan meaningful rituals, or sit vigil with loved ones to provide ongoing companionship up to and including through the active dying phase
Another key difference is time. Hospice nurses and volunteers are limited in the amount of time they can spend with a patient. An end-of-life doula, on the other hand, can be available to the dying person and their family for as much time as needed in the lead up to and during the active dying process. We will work with you to design a unique care and support plan that fits your unique needs.

At Butterfly Wings our doula’s are hospice trained and have worked within the hospice system. We integrate our services with those provided by hospice in order to provide you with holistic end-of-life support.

End-of-life doulas not only support the individual at the end of life but also provide guidance and comfort to family members before, during and after their loss.
Our Butterfly Wings Doulas are certified grief educators who can assist with grief coaching, organizing memorials, facilitating discussions about wishes, providing respite care or simply being a compassionate presence during a difficult time. This continuum of care provides support to help ease the emotional and practical burdens on families as their loved ones approach end of life.

The death transition, while extremely challenging, is also an opportunity to creating lasting memories. Butterfly Death doulas can help guide you through the process, providing a sense of peace and calm, and allowing you to focus on planning the your own unique end of life experience.

Whether it’s help with creating a legacy, organizing logistics, sitting vigil, or finding ways to bring peace and comfort, our end-of-life doulas tailor their services to meet your unique needs, and ensuring that you and your family do not have to face this journey alone.

Yes, palliative care peak bodies from all Australian states and territories, as well as Flinders University, have developed ‘end-of-life doulas and palliative care’ resources to assist palliative care services and health professionals to work with their patients and their end-of-life doula to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.
